Internet forums. Oops, where did my sanity go?

Posted by Robzor238 Jan. 21, 2009 @ 8:19 AM EST

I've noticed of late that my Newgrounds user page has become my little hub of internet-related rantings. Well, that's alright. I can live with that, since I really need somewhere to get it all off my chest, so it might as well be here on my own little page, rather than directly plumbed down the throats of internet users. Unlike many, many forum users.

Forums. I tend to avoid them like the plague and my ex-wife combined, but they're everywhere. So very hard to avoid them. Google searches for obscure topics or questions tend to point to some random page of a random forum, somewhere off in Internet Land. Sometimes actually fairly useful. Most of the time, not so much. Forum users seem to be of a particular breed, a special internet personality I like to refer to as Practical Gabe Theorists. This obscure term comes from Penny Arcade, long-standing pillar of the webcomic community. John Gabriels Greater Internet Dickwad Theory clearly states - "Normal Person plus Anonymity plus Audience equals Total Dickwad". And for the most part, he's completely correct.

We've all met them. If anyone other than me is actually reading this, then you might even be one of them. Forum users who know it all, will never ever concede a point to anyone else, and seem to scale their general foul attitude directly alongside their post count. Got no clue about the topic? Glance over Wikipedia and claim all knowledge. Arguing a matter of pure opinion, such as taste in music? Well, you need to be taken out behind whatever building you're in and be shot, as you're the worst of the lot. No-one but me can tell me what music I like. Deal with it.

Pointless posts, you cry? Fantastic. Let's make a poll, asking which one of three specific games I should buy. You don't need to know how I came up with this shortlist. Maybe I already own the other hot titles avaliable at the moment? Maybe I don't want to? These are the three I'm choosing between. Let's give it an hour... Yep, 400 posts arguing that I should really buy a game that's not on my list, as it's better than all of them. Nice work, Internets.

And don't even get me started on the sheer mind-numbing level of awful internet lingo you'll dig up on forums. I'll save that for another rant, because that one I could rage on all night.

Before I go, a special message. Dear No Mutants Allowed forum users, Fallout 3 is absolutely brilliant. Deal with it.

Love, Robzor.

Terrific post as always, good sir!

The arrogance and idiocy that forums and comment posts are riddled with is gradually deteriorating any interest in seeing what the civilian internet user has to say about anything. Video games in particular are the main topic where the anonymous douche reigns supreme. In just about any video game forum these days you are sure to find arguments consisting of personal preference being stated as fact and lush bombardments of irrelevant and non-helpful insults.

Take for instance the age old argument of what the best FPS (First person Shooter) is out there. I'm certain you have seen either proclamations or childishly executed debates upon this idea. A Halo fan boy gets on a Gears of War video or forum and posts that Halo ousts it completely and Gears of War is either gay, retarded, stupid, a waste of time, or whatever other choice or word or phrase this person may have out of their generally limited vocabulary. The same can be applied to the opposite or varying titles.

Their arguments tend to consist of vulgar comments toward the person, INAPPROPRIATE USE OF CAPS LOCK, and ill used technical terminology. Nine times out of ten, their arguments do not even help the actual topic of conversation and greatly divert from them.

Man, even in forums where the topic may be social, political, financial, geographical or whatever other word ending in al lol You are guaranteed to find the Internet Douche. Someone will come on and make some thick-headed remark usually with knowledge they acquired from the oh so reputable source of Wikipedia.

Never does my amusement end in seeing the Wikipedia buff claim being well educated by spewing their knowledge learned from a resource that has less credibility than its spoof counterpart Uncyclopedia.

I will shamefully admit right now that I have used Wikipedia to reference material in a term paper or three (write it off as coming from somewhere else of course) But this is far from a credible source of information. The content can be written and edited from anyone anywhere. That instantly terminates any form of credibility that the website has as a source of information. There have certainly been instances where the information is accurate but it generally tends to be on entertainment related content. The areas of history or politics tends to be a tad off in many cases with either statistical data or details of an event.

Getting back to the subject at hand of the anonymous douche. I believe that this is something that will never cease to be. Ignorance is something we as humans will continue to have amongst our diverse population in the planet. There simply is no getting around it other than merely trying to avoid it for I myself have no power to extinguish it, not very many of us do.

But consider this: the douche bag will mercilessly insult and denounce things it dislikes without good reasoning, evidence, or justification for their own statements. They talk so big in their attempts to degrade things or people, but what makes them so special? What have they accomplished that puts them in the position of talking down to everyone?

I have my own opinions of different things in the world but I don't consider it to outweigh the ideas of anyone else. If I prefer one piece of media over another I will not make an attempt to prove that what I enjoy is better than what you enjoy and you are a complete fool for liking what you're into. Doing so is simply egotistical. And that is what I feel the anonymous douche bag is, an egotistical person fueled merely by the anonymity of the internet, the fact that people egg them on by trying to contradict them and that anyone even pays any attention to them.

It's kind of sad really. I usually feel pretty sorry for the anonymous douche. These are people who are seeking attention and find joy in insulting people, acting big by hiding behind their monitors as they lash at you with vulgarity. But physically encounter these people to find the true face of cowardice.

It's so unfortunate. A person like that usually doesn't make it very far in life. But on the brighter side of things, at least a person aspiring to make something out of themselves doesn't have very much competition, most of those people that could have been competitors for a job are too busy being trolls on the internet! haha

As always mate, my posts just aren't the same without your responses. Very well said sir, and I heartily agree.
